It was instilled in us, from the time we were small, to have great respect for nature and the world we live in. Regardless of what the current situation our lives may be in, it was expected that we would not forget the basic principals of caring for our family, our land and for how we conduct ourselves. Our parents taught us that abusing nature and all that has been provided to us was the same as bringing bodily harm to ourselves and those we love.
We were told, as children and young people, that it was our responsibility to keep our family and land together for future generations. Sadly, it is a long journey home for some of us, and the desire to uphold the responsibility we were given sometimes clashes with the realities of everyday modern obligations. While it is true that none of us can do it alone, maybe we can work together to see what we can do to honor the wishes of those that came before us.

I am a reservation born Navajo woman living in the Valley of the Sun. I was born to the Bitterwater Clan for the Edgewater Clan. My grandfathers are from the Deer Water and Towering House Clans.
